CPAI 84 is a standard for tent flame retardant requirements published by IFAI (Industrial Fabric Association International). The standard covers products including all tent types (camping tents and indoor tents). Some other outdoor products also refer to CPAI 84 for flame retardant requirements.According to the CPAI 84 standard, tent materials are divided into:
1) Flooring material bottom material;
2) Wall and top material wall and top material;
For bottom materials , CPAI 84 specifies horizontal combustion measurement. The test steps are as follows:
1 ) Place the test cabinet in the fume hood, and place the sample support frame in the test cabinet;
2 ) Prick a 6mm hole in the center of the test sample;
3 ) Place the sample on the sample support frame to make it level and flat, then place the ignition source methylamine tablet on the sample so that the distance from the small hole in the sample is no more than 3mm;
4 ) Ignite the methylamine tablets and observe the test;
5 ) When all combustion stops, ventilate, test the damaged length of the sample, and record the data.
Test result judgment:
When the test sample is tested according to the method in Part 5 of this standard, whether it is the original sample, or a sample that has been soaked in water or aged, the damaged length of any test sample cannot exceed 72mm.
For wall and roof materials , CPAI 84 provides for a vertical combustion determination. The test procedures are as follows:
1 ) Install the sample on the sample clamp and hang it in the test cabinet. The distance between the lowest point of the sample and the upper end of the fire source tube is 20mm;
2 ) Adjust the height of the fire source to 38mm (±3mm) (the test gas is methane);
3 ) Start the instrument and move the fire source directly below the sample. After burning for 12 seconds, remove the fire source and record the afterburning time;
4 ) After the combustion is completed, take out the sample and measure the damaged length of the sample;
Test result judgment:
When the test sample is tested by the method in Part 6 of this standard, whether it is the original sample, or a sample that has been soaked in water or aged,
1 ) The afterburning time of any test sample cannot exceed 4 seconds, and the average afterburning time does not exceed 2 seconds. The damaged or dripping parts during the combustion process fall to the bottom of the test cabinet and cannot continue to burn;
2 ) Damaged Length damaged length
When the test sample is tested by methods 6.4.5 and 6.4.6 of Section 6 of this standard, the damage length and average damage length of a single test sample cannot exceed the values in the following table:
Ro11 Material Weight(g/m2) | Maximum Average Damaged Length for Sample Unit -mm | Maximum Damaged Length for an Individual Sample Unit -mm |
More than 340 | 115 | 255 |
270-340 | 140 | 255 |
200-270 | 165 | 255 |
135-200 | 190 | 255 |
50-135 | 215 | 255 |
50 or less | 230 | 255 |
In addition, CPAI 84 specifically stipulates the pre-test treatment of samples. The pre-treatment includes two parts: Leaching and Accelerated Weathering. It should be noted that wall and roof materials need to be tested before and after accelerated aging.
Leaching treatment methods are as follows:
1 ) Bottom material: 230mm×230mm (±3mm) four pieces in the latitude and longitude direction;
2 ) Wall and roof materials: 70mm×300mm (±3mm) four pieces in the latitude and longitude direction;
3 ) Test method: The sample is immersed in a constant temperature circulating water washing tank for 72 hours, water temperature: 15.5~21℃, PH value: 6~8, water volume: for fabrics, every 0.1m2 sample is not less than 2L water. Test if there is no Circulating water, the water in the tank should be changed at least 6 times within 72 hours.
Accelerated Weathering processing methods are as follows:
1 ) Bottom material: 230mm×230mm (±3mm) four pieces in the latitude and longitude direction;
2 ) Wall and roof materials: 90mm×300mm (±3mm) four pieces in the latitude and longitude directions;
3 ) Test method:
(a) Method 5804 of Fed-std 191 ( carbon arc lamp)
(b) AATCC Method 169 ( xenon lamp)
(c) ASTM D 4329 (Fluorescent UV and Condensation Method)
