BS 5852 Flame retardancy test for furniture fabrics, Fire test - Standard name
BS 5852-2006: Test method for evaluating the fire performance of soft seats using smoldering and burning ignition sources
BS 5852-2006:Methods of test for assessment of the ignitability of upholstered seating by smouldering and flaming ignition sources
BS 5852 Furniture Fabric Flame Retardant Test, Fire Test - Analysis
BS 5852 is used to determine the flammability of material combinations (such as coverings and filling materials for soft seats) when exposed to a burning cigarette and match or equivalent ignition source.
All styles of household upholstered furniture in the UK must comply with the "Furniture Fire Safety Clauses", the 1988 amendments to BS 5852 Part 1 and BS 5852 Part 2 which were withdrawn by the BSI but still apply to the clauses mentioned in the referenced standards.

BS 5852 Flame retardant test of furniture fabrics, Fire test – Test method
The test shall be carried out in a standard air flow laboratory. The covering material and filling are placed in a test equipment to create a base and backrest at 90° for a small sofa. The ignition source is placed at the connection between the base and the backrest of the sofa. There are 6 different ignition sources, numbered 2-7, of which 2-3 are gas burning fire sources, and 4-7 wood product burning fire sources (more Higher numbers represent more intense fire sources in the same group).
During the gas burning process, the smoldering time from the beginning shall not exceed 30 minutes (for wood products burning sources shall not exceed 60 minutes). If the test cannot show that the fire source is charred and charred in different directions 100mm upward, the gas flame shall be smoldering in 40 seconds. Then remove it (Fire Source 2) or remove it after 70 seconds (Fire Source 3). If there is no flame, it is allowed to continue until more than 120 seconds after the burning tube is removed. If there is no flame, it is allowed to continue Fire Source 5 for 10 minutes after the test starts (Fire Source 3). 13 minutes for sources 6-7).
