ISO 4589-2 Combustion Oxygen Index Test
Ä ISO 4589-2 standard name
ISO 4589-2 Plastics-Determination of burning behaviour by oxygen index –Part 2: Ambient-temperature test
ISO 4589-2 Plastics - Determination of combustion behavior by the oxygen index method - Part 2: Room temperature tests
Ä ISO 4589-2 test principles
Oxygen index: Under specified test conditions, a mixed gas of oxygen and nitrogen at 23°C ± 2°C is introduced to maintain the minimum oxygen concentration required for combustion.
Fix a sample vertically in a transparent combustion tube with upward flowing oxygen and nitrogen mixed gas, ignite the top of the sample, and observe the combustion characteristics of the sample. Compare the continuous burning time of the sample or the burning length of the sample with the given standard. In comparison, the minimum value of oxygen concentration is estimated through a series of experiments at different oxygen concentrations.
In order to compare with the specified minimum oxygen index value, three samples are tested and at least two samples are judged to be extinguished according to the standard.
Ä ISO 4589-2 Ignition method
üignition method:
For self-supporting materials (such as molded materials, foam materials, thick sheet materials, moldings and sheets for electrical appliances), use the top ignition method and mark a line 50MM away from the ignition end. During the test, it is removed every 5 seconds, and the removal time is limited to just enough time to determine whether the entire top surface of the sample is on fire. After confirming that the top surface of the specimen is on fire, immediately remove the igniter, start timing and observe the burning length. The longest time the flame contacts the top surface shall not exceed 30S. If it cannot ignite within 30S, increase the oxygen concentration and continue ignition until it ignites within 30S.
üDignition method:
For non-self-supporting materials (such as soft sheets or films), the diffusion ignition method is used (self-supporting materials are also applicable). The flame is applied to the top surface of the specimen and simultaneously to the vertical surfaces. When igniting, remove the igniter every 5 seconds or so to observe the sample. The maximum flame action time is 30 seconds until the vertical side surface is stably burning or the front edge of the visible burning part reaches the upper mark. Remove the flame. When using frame clamps for film products, shrinkage and other phenomena may occur due to burning. Standard ISO/TC61/SC4 recommends using the roll method for testing to obtain better stability and reproducibility.
Ä ISO 4589-2 test method
Both rigid and soft materials can be tested in specific fixtures. The clamp is installed in a transparent combustion tube in which a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen flows upward in a laminar flow manner. After the sample condition is adjusted, room temperature testing is usually performed. When the top surface is ignited, the flame contact surface lasts for a maximum of 30 seconds, and is removed every 5 seconds to observe whether the sample burns. This ensures that the sample temperature is not too high, resulting in a lower OI value. During diffusion ignition, the flame contacts the vertical side of the sample and is about 6 mm downward. In the film test, wrap the film around the rod at 45°, remove the rod, fix the end of the sample and cut off 20mm from the top.
Ä ISO 4589-2 Test Application
This standard is generally used for testing the combustion properties of small-sized materials (final products).
NF F 16-101 :1988 refers to the standards EN ISO 4589-2 and IEC 60695-2-11 for the test of Level I oxygen index.
Based on the two test results of EN ISO 4589-2 and IEC 60695-2-11, the five levels (I0, I1, I2, I3, I4) of Level I oxygen index levels I0-I4 are evaluated.
grade | Oxygen Index | glow wire |
I0 | ≥70 | At 960℃ , not burning |
I1 | ≥45 | At 960℃ , not burning |
I2 | ≥32 | At 850℃ , not burning |
I3 | ≥28 | After removing the hot filament, the burning does not continue at 850℃ |
