British Standard: BS6853 – Flame retardant test of rail vehicle materials, fire test

The following is an interpretation of the British standard BS6853 for flame retardant and fire protection testing of rail vehicle materials :

BS6853 British Flame Retardant Fire Test – Standard Name:

BS6853: Code of practice for fire precautions in the design and construction of passenger carrying trains / BS6853: General code for fire prevention in the design and construction of passenger carrying trains

BS6853 British Flame Retardant Fire Test – Standard Overview:

The purpose of the BS6853 British Standard is to ensure the safety of passengers on and around vehicles carrying passenger trains. BS6853 British Standard explains to railway vehicle manufacturers the authoritative part of safety regulations regarding fire performance. This standard strengthens the responsibilities of railway vehicle designers and manufacturers and encourages them to use safer materials that release less toxic substances in flames. .

Compliance with this standard means that the following conditions shall be provided:
  • Achieve acceptable control of fire hazards
  • Achieve acceptable control of the total level of heat, smoke and toxic gases when all major material surfaces are exposed to fire sources
  • All materials or items required to be used as fireproof boards, as well as materials and items required to function when exposed to fire sources, should achieve acceptable fireproof performance

BS6853 British flame retardant and fire protection test - standard scope of application:

BS6853 British Standard provides recommendations for the design and construction of railway vehicles including or forming part of passenger trains.
Recommendations for this standard include:
  • Material reaction to fire (combustion, smoke generation, smoke toxicity)
  • Use of fireproof board
  • General aspects of fire safety facility design
